Digestive System

This report is about the Digestive System. This system takes up 1/2 of the body. We will talk about the major organs, system functions, disorders and diseases, staying healthy, and other interesting facts.

Major Organs

The major organs are the mouth, esophagus, the stomach, the small intestine, and the large intestine.

System Functions

First your food goes in the mouth were it gets ground and crunched while mixing with saliva.
The food travels down the esophagus. Special muscles move the food down the long slender tube.
Ater that it lands in the stomach.
The stomach grinds up the food with the muscles mixing with stomach acid.
Then it goes through the small intestine. This sucks out all of the Nutrients
After the small intestine comes the large intestine. The large intestine sucks out the rest of the water.
After the large intestine you’re ready to use the bathroom to get rid of the waste.

Some of the interactions between the digestive system and the other systems are:

1.The air from the respiratory system goes through the esophagus and so does the food from the digestive system.

2.The digestive system digests your food and the excretory system dumps the waste.

Celiac disease damages the small intestine that messes with the absorption of the nutrients that you need. People with Celiac disease can’t handle gluten, protein in wheat, rye, and barley. It also can create diarrhea which can be bloody. You may also vomit and have constipation. If you have celiac disease you may be irritable and your abdomen may be starting to bloat and you would be in a lot of pain. One of the possible treatments for celiac disease is...... a gluten free diet because there is no antibiotic for celiac disease. As of right now, sceintists don't know what exactly causes celiac disease, scientists think that many factors can cause celiac disease, but they don't know for sure.
Acid Reflux is when the stomach acid protrudes into the esophagus. When this happens it could damage your esophagus. This could cause bleeding. It could also make your esophagus shrink, which then makes it hard to swallow. Some of symptoms of acid reflex are: dry cough, sore throat, chest pain, heart burn, burping, nausea after eating, stomach fullness or bloating, upper abdomen pain, and discomfort. One of the treatments for acid reflex is Dexilant. Dexilant is a medicine that can help heal previously damaged portions of the esophagus. If you eat too many spicy foods, drink too much alcohol, and smoke too much you could get acid reflux.
